The Gaean Chronicles

by ~LyraAlluse

The Gaean Chronicles: Issue Number One (8/07/06)

1.) The Skinny: Choosing Topics for Stories

It happens every time without fail. You are sitting in your English class minding your own business when all of the sudden your teacher gives you a writing assignment. You start to panic. I have to write something? Isn’t English just one big spelling bee? Why can’t we just work on grammar exercises? Questions like these start to float through your mind like leaves down a tranquil river.

But after a while your panic level goes down. After all, it’s not like you’ll have to think about what to write. The teacher more than likely will give you a topic to go off of. So you start to calm down. But then the unthinkable happens. With an evil grin on their face your teacher mutters the dreaded words, “Choose your own topic” and you feel your blood freeze.

You start to panic again. What am I going to write about? It has to be HOW MANY pages long? Why couldn’t I have just stayed home sick today? Questions like these race through your mind as the teacher passes out the rubric for your creative writing assignment. As your teacher draws closer to your seat, you sink down in your chair, hoping that by some miracle the teacher will not notice you are there. But it’s no use.

After raising an eyebrow, your teacher places the rubric on you desk and moves on to the next row of desks behind you. You stare at the rubric with a blank expression on your face. Feeling quite sick to your stomach you ask yourself how you are you going to get out of this sticky situation. Hopefully in today’s issue I can help you work through this problem and give you the tools to work through any type of writer’s block.

This can be achieved by following the seven rules of creative writing. They are as follows.

Rule Number One: Keep your hand moving

Even if you are not sure what to write about, keep your hand moving on the paper (or fingers typing on the keyboard.) This helps get the creative juices flowing. Start out by picking a random topic and go from there. You’d be surprised where your mind a little bit of effort can take you. If you are stuck on what topic to choose, start by writing about something simple like your day or your friends and family. After a while you will have enough material to start writing a story with. Remember that no idea is bad. The point of creative writing is to capture an original idea in a way that no one has thought of doing before. So keep your hand moving and let the words flow.

Rule Number Two: Use control

Be sure to keep the words you are writing on your paper organized so that you can understand what you wrote when you visit your computer to make a final copy of your work in your personal word processing program. When writing it also helps to make charts or trees about the subjects you are focusing in your specific pieces. Even when I am writing my fantasy novel series, I make relationship charts and make extensive notes to myself about the characters, kingdoms and other details of the book series that are relevant to the plot. When writing essays it helps to write your subject down and list everything you know about it prior to doing research underneath. This gives you organization and some tools to help your paper later on when you are comparing and contrasting the subject being discussed. Remember that organization is the key to being a successful writer.

Rule Number Three: Be specific

When you are writing down ideas for your piece of writing be sure to put as much details about what you are trying to say on the paper. So many times emerging writers have a great idea but they leave vague notes for themselves. When they go back to write their paper they find that they cannot understand the notes they took and the inspiration goes right out the door. (Along with all of the time and hard work they put into the piece.) If you can remember to take good notes and keep good records of all of your ideas, writing your idea down on paper will be a piece of cake. It’s ok to make notes of your notes as well. Often times when I get an idea I will write quick notes and then write more specific notes underneath.

This helps me understand the direction that I want to take my piece of writing in and prevents me from having a case of “what-was-it-I-tried-to-write-itis.” When you come around to writing your paper, take your notes and describe the things in your story/ essay with great detail. Don’t leave the audience guessing at what you were trying to say; describe things in a way that everyone will understand what you are trying to get at. A successful writer writes in layman’s terms. Never assume your audience is all knowing; always talk to them like they do not know what is going on. Even if it’s as simple of a topic as bubble gum, be specific and don’t leave any details out! So remember; take good notes and when you write your paper be specific so your target audience knows what you are talking about!

Rule Number Four: Don’t think

One of the biggest errors that emerging authors make is that they get hung up on one topic which prevents them from progressing further in their piece of writing. If you get hung up on one specific area in your piece, inspiration will surely pass you by. Therefore, keep your hands moving. Even if the sentence or paragraph you write down doesn’t make any sense at all at least you have some material to edit and work with later on down the road. One way to get around writers block is to write down a list of things you want to include in your piece of writing and elaborate on each one. While this is not writing the actual story it keeps your hand moving and gives you inspiration so that when you write your final piece you will have lots of things to write about. Over thinking your piece of writing will only lead you down a road of confusion (and give you a headache) so remember; open your mind and let the words flow!

Rule Number Five: Don’t worry about punctuation, spelling or grammar

When you are writing down ideas for your rough draft, do not be a grammar Nazi!! If you get hung up on dotting I’s, placing apostrophes in the correct places and capitalizing certain words your inspiration will go right out the door. Therefore focus on the ideas you have and write them down before they pass you by! When you type your final piece in a word processing program you can run a spell check and do the editing then. You can even have a friend or family member look over your piece of writing to make sure all of the “kinks” are worked out of it. Until then, focus on the idea and heart of your piece of writing. A successful writer is one that is not afraid to spell a few words wrong for the overall integrity of their piece. Remember this and you will succeed in any writing goal you get out to accomplish.

Rule Number Six: You are free to write the worse junk in America (or any other country)

As a writer, you have the right to write the lousiest stuff around; just as long as you think it’s good. Don’t let anyone discourage your writing style; own it and work on making it the best style you can. This is not to say that you can’t take constructive criticism. One of the best ways to grow as a writer is to have people review your pieces and take suggestions on how to improve your story telling style or write more in depth. However if anyone ever tells you that you will never go anywhere with your writing just because you wrote something they don’t agree with, I say ignore them, and ignore them good! ANYONE can be a successful writer if they put their mind to it. Work hard and you can be all that you can be. So remember; write on! Don’t let anyone discourage you from meeting your writing goals! (Or deadlines. ^_-)

Rule Number Seven: Go for the jugular

When you are writing a piece of writing, go for the jugular! You might be asking yourself; what does that mean? Well, it simply means to take your topic or idea and write it in a way that it has pizzazz and stands out. No one wants to read a boring history report. Jazz it up with little known facts about the time period! You can even draw pictures to aid you in your story telling. The important thing is that you keep your audience interested in your piece of writing. If you loose their attention in the first paragraph then your whole story is lost. Therefore, pull them in from the very first sentence and don’t let them go until you are done. Always leave the audience wanting more. If you can achieve this goal than you will be an excellent writer.

I hope that these seven rules will help you with your next piece of writing. Just remember; even if a writing project seems huge and out of reach you can tackle it by breaking it into pieces and taking on those small mini-tasks one at a time. Until next issue, this is Lyra saying write on and never let anyone discourage you from being all you can be.

2.) He said, She Said: In the Words of Charles Schultz

Charles Schultz (the creator of the peanuts gang) had a famous quote. During an interview he said, “Like a ten speed bicycle most of is have gears we never use.”

As writers we all have gears that we have never used. We all have stories that we have never written, styles we have never tries, characters we have never written. We even have talents they we are not aware of! This in mind, don’t be afraid to try new things. The world is filled with exciting places to visit, amazing sites to see and a plethora of activities to engage in. If you find an activity you enjoy don’t be afraid to pursuit it. This activity could very well turn into a life long passion or even a career! So never be afraid to follow you dreams. Even if you fail the first time, if you wish to pursuit a certain path, keep working hard until you are good enough. Never give up and be the best you can be in everything you do. Like a bicycle we all have gears we never use, so go out and try to find your hidden talent today!

3.) The Mind’s Eye: If there was no tomorrow what would you do today?

If you woke up today and you knew that there wouldn’t be a tomorrow, what would you do? Would you spend your last moments on this world having fun with your friends? Would you use the time to get closer to your family? Or would you spend the day playing nothing but DDR? Everyone’s answer to this question will be slightly different depending on their personal values and what holds the most importance in their lives.

But personally, if I only had one day left on this world I’d use it to pursuit all of my dreams; even the absurd ones. I would let my family and friends know how much a love them by giving them all a big hug and inviting them to see a random movie. Once out trip to the theatre was complete I would set out on a journey of complete nonsense. I’d fill a pool with tapioca and go swimming in it, engage in a chocolate pudding wrestling match with my friend Liz and then have the ultimate Disney movie marathon. While watching my top ten favorite Disney movies I’d sit on my butt and eat junk food and ice cream until I felt like I was going to pop. When the movies were over I’d hike my two favorite trails here in Flagstaff with my friend Patrick since he loves the outdoors as much as I do.

Then I would talk to every person I could find in Flagstaff and tell them to check out my online art gallery and publications. I’d give my business card to everyone I met and would go on a journey of helping people in the process. Once I had helped forty two people solve their problems I’d call it a day and head home. As the day drew to a close, I’d invite all of my friends over and end the night by singing Karaoke and drinking margaritas. This sounds like an impossible amount of tasks to do in one day but with enough devotion I am sure that I could pull it off. After all, why make your last day depressing? If I have to go I’m going to fizzle out with a bang. And that’s kind of how I view life in general.

Thinking from the point of view of the ancient Babylonians, every day really was their last day since they had a bleak outlook on the afterlife. You had to enjoy life while you could because when you died you would be a servant to the Gods and would be forced to eat clay and dust for all eternity. That made life a little more important that just waking up in the morning and milking the cows. They had to make every second, of every day, week, month and year count or they would forget about their happiness when they were enslaved to the God’s in the afterlife. So they had to live each day like it was their last. Imagine how our individual lives would change if we lived by the same values.

We wouldn’t be restricted by what the world told us we could do; we would make every moment count and do what WE wanted to do. We would keep our dreams and ambitions alive in our hearts and the belief in miracles deep in our souls. Little by little the world would change into a better place to live everyday because people would stop doing what they were obligated to go and would start doing what their hearts told them to do. People would start giving back to others because wanted to; not because they were obligated to do so to get a tax break. People would start supporting others in their goal to achieve their dreams because they would understand what it was like to follow their own.

So consider this message and start living each day like it is you last today because you never know where life will bring you when you are willing to keep the magic of dreams alive in your heart.

4.) In the Spotlight:

In today’s “spotlight” I would like to take some time out to recognize a talented artist on Deviant Art who is a veteran member and a dear friend. Evil Francesca has been drawing digital pieces on Deviant Art for many years and each time she posts them they get better and better. She’s always looking for new ways to improve her pieces and offers constructive criticism to other artists and authors to help them grow in their work as well. Therefore, it is my pleasure to announce Evil Francesca as this week's in the spotlight artist! Congratulations Frannie! Keep up the good work with your gallery.

You can check out Frannie’s gallery at this link; http://evil-francesca.deviantart.com/

Final Notes:

The seven steps of creative writing prompts were provided by my English 101 teacher, Mrs. Brougher. I am not sure whether the prompts were made by her or a second party, but whoever made them gets a pat on the back. All of the descriptions were made by me and are not to be used without my consent. Cheers!

I'd love to have your brain for one day. @_@

Writing assignments. Since I was home schooled for most of my educational years, and the time spent in public schooling was sparse, to say the least, I can barely remember these, but when I do, I feel the dread you describe. Choose your own topic?
Panic.
When someone wants you to be creative or think up things at the spur of the moment, it's so difficult. A person may want to do it, but it's so much easier when it comes to you on it's own. You gave some good advice; I especially liked the part about keeping your hand moving! The times I do remember being in English or a class and having a writing assignment, is not being able to move my hand. Or my brain, for that matter. I suppose we have all froze up at one time or another.
(It's a terrible feeling, isn't it?)

Your suggestion on keeping notes when writing I liked as well. Back when I used to write fanfictions, or even original stories, I never used notes. I kept them all in my head, and eventually, all on the computer, to be easily edited at a later date. But unfortunately, when I looked back on some of them, I too was stuck with the "what is going on here? Why can't I remember this or that".
Though it's rather disappointing at the moment, to me it personally don't matter much since I don't write anymore, heh.

Ah. Layman’s terms. Yes, not everyone in the world is as smart, charming, and intelligent as ourselves.
*snerk*
And they certainly can't read our minds. I've read a lot of fanfiction over the last couple of years online, and have seen the many different ways people write; I think, depending on who the person is reading, (since everyone has different likes and dislikes) people enjoy it when the author focuses not just on the characters and plot, but on telling the story, to you. A good author makes it enjoyable to read, and can make the audience feel as if they are being told a story just for them. Even if it's a fanfiction.
But I really shouldn't base all storytelling or writing on fanfictions only; I used to be a reader back in the day, and have spent many a early morning hour finishing up books and novels when TV programming was not available to me, and the internet was still in it's baby stages. As you age, different sujects and different writing styles become more interesting to you. Like, when I was 13, I could barely get through an Agatha Christy novel. Now I read all the Jane Austin novels I can get my hands on, the Bronte sisters, and so forth.

"...if anyone ever tells you that you will never go anywhere with your writing just because you wrote something they don’t agree with, I say ignore them, and ignore them good!"

Hell yeah. There are certain manners one must remember when reading another person's work. One of the basics is that if you don't like it, or don't agree, it's very uncouth to start bashing said author.
"Like, OMG You SUCK! Your writing STINKS! WTF? Why are you even ALIVE, Douchebag!"

There is such witlessness in the world. And online it is exercised even more. Random flaming, haters, and all around stupid people abound. And so if these certain people don't understand, and don't care to, why bother to make a comment at all? If anything you are only fueling the author's need to continue. Constructive criticism hits home better then any flame out there. The possibility of reasoning like human beings instead of silly hormonal teenagers with simply nothing better to do, seems quite scarce.
Would a real critique with work featured in newspapers or magazines, bother to debase themselves in such a manner? No- they use carefully thought out words and phrases, and, some, will be quite honest and state that they personally didn't care for it, but leave it open for anyone else to gather their own opinion on it.

What would I do if I had only one day left? Hmm...
Wait. It's come to me. Like, a blinding flash from a pillar of light!
I would like...
To go watch the entire Escaflowne series.
Because...I've never watched it all the wya through.
Yes. Laugh. Go ahead. evil-francesca has NEVER seen the entire series before. One of the die-hard promoters amongst our friends circle is INEPT.
I've read the screen-lines from each episode. But I've never made it past episode...five. I think. Seen lots of screen-caps, read lots of fictions and gleaned as much information as humanly possible from the internet without actually seeing the damn thing, but...alas...
I have not seen it in it's entirety.
Or read the manga.
But I have seen the movie. X3 And the movie OWNED. *heart flutters*
I'm fangirling. Sorry.

And yeah...tapioca. Dang. That would be fun. *.* And look how nice you are! You included family and friends. My plan consisted of (old) Japanese Anime.
:lmao:
Thanks again for the spotlight. You're so sweet.

Concerning my brain...honey, you can it for all I care. (As I never seem to get much use out of it...lol) You'd probably use it better than I do. Be warned though; it's about as crazy and disfunctional as I am. LOL j/k

Anyway...onto more serious matters...

You've never seen the Escaflowne series all the way through??? *mouth drops open in shock* Oh dear! Well then I have a mission to find the whole series via bit torrent and send it to you some how. I could give you the links I guess but you'd have to download a bit torrent server like bit comet. I'll see what I can find and I'll let you know!

I am glad that you enjoyed my newspaper article. That makes me happy. ^^ I got my sistah from another mistah's approval! woooo go me! *big grin* Oh, and no problem about being featured. You deserve it! Keep up the good work Frannie. I admire your work and I am sure many people will come to admire it as much as me in the future. ^__^

Dail. Up.
:cries:
It's the only reason why I haven't downloaded anime episodes before. :( Like...for instance...your AMV, which I am at the moment trying to watch, took the better part of a half an hour to get to 46 seconds, and POOF! Suddenly it won't load anymore. :shakefist: I'll have to try one of the other links you gave. >.>

Yeah...shocking that I haven't watched Esca, isn't it? :giggle: I feel so hypocritical. But I can never find it in the entertainment stores and I never order things online because I don't have a credit card. My plan is to "order it" through a store and have them deliver it to the store and that way I can buy it. Buying anime seems so weird, I bet, especially when you can watch it for free online, but for people like me, it's the only way I can get access to it. :(

I've found some at Bandai's official website, but I haven't really searched for them on FYE or anything. I've got to rustle me up some extra money before I can even think about buying the who set at least. ^^
