Well, Here I am waiting in a cafe by the subway waiting for my niece to arrive. It's been so long since I've seen her that...no. I don't want to think about the memories...about the day she left me for a new country. I'm so mixed up inside. I don't know whether I am happy or frightened to see the person I loved like a daughter again.
Perhaps under different circumstances I would feel comfortable, but not here...not in this place. All I can think about is that large truck coming around the bend and smashing my car. I've been waiting in this cafe ever since. The service is slow, and when they do speak to me, a young waitress tells me that I'll meet my niece soon, but she has yet to walk through the door.
I don't know why I am here...I feel completely disorientated. One minute I'm driving home and the next...I can't be dreaming. I feel the warm air of a heater on a near by table blowing on my face. This has to be real. I see my niece walk through the door and I feel pure fear. She's supposed to be...does that mean I am too?
She talks to me but I do not hear the words. An overwhelming feeling of happiness overtakes my body, as I embrace her with one of my famous "Aunty Karen," hugs, ignoring what she has just told me. She smiles and takes my hand. "Don't worry Aunt Karen; I'll take you home." I hear her say as she takes my hand and leads me on to the subway...
After many ages of travel I have finally reached my destination. As I stand at the gates of heaven with my niece holding my hands, a tear slides down my cheek. It has taken me a life time, but I have finally found the one place where I truly feel at home.
I like the way that 'limbo' as it were, is like earth...thats really clever.
If you extended this, you could really play with readers' heads and make them wonder where they are.
Its very well written though for a short piece, well done.
